As we turn the page into a new year, aerobic fitness is the name of the game in cycling and building an aerobic base is essential for creating endurance, power and speed. In this episode, we share our three essential base building rides that fit into our weekly programming, along with progressively higher intensity workouts, for our WE athletes and training plans:

  • the ‘zone 2’ Aerobic Endurance Ride
  • our ‘zone 3’ Aerobic Threshold Intervals
  • and our ‘zone 3/4’ Aerobic Strength Intervals

These rides/workouts require most riders to SLOW DOWN in order to get faster! We share our reasons for training by heart rate in order to govern your effort and simply observing where your power is on the day. This strategy allows us to recognize positive trends of improved fitness as well as provide ‘red flags’ of potential issues that may be limiting your improvements.

Learn how we break these (normally) long intervals into smaller ‘broken intervals’ to make adjusting to the higher intensity work more achievable and effective early in the base season.
